It houses sixth, seventh, and eighth-grade students, who are assigned to one of six academic teams. District Articulators in the content areas of language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, fine arts, and technology to assist to ensure that our curriculum is rich in content, current, and challenging.
The Rockaway Township School District is committed to providing excellence in education in a manner that inspires all children to strive to meet their fullest potential within a nurturing and challenging environment. It is our goal, at Copeland Middle School, to provide an educational program that meets the needs of all of our students in an educational environment that is safe, supportive, and caring. We believe that it is also our responsibility to provide educational experiences that promote self-esteem, respect for individual differences, and a commitment to our community.
At Copeland, our main objective is to help each child achieve his or her best. We value student feedback, teamwork, positive culture, collaboration, communication, and character. Our vision is to continue to cultivate a collaborative environment where all stakeholders communicate and implement strategies that will serve the best interest of students, and is proactive in serving student needs, and provides programs that reach all learners. During the past three years, our staff has worked tirelessly to develop a comprehensive program that fits the needs of each child. We have introduced a new math sequence highlighted by Geometry in grade 8 and science sequence highlighted by Biology in grade 8. The World Language Program has expanded to include German. Students will be afforded the opportunity to take the Spanish 1 or German 1 placement test at the end of their eighth-grade year. Students that pass this exam will begin their high school language career in Spanish or German II. Related arts classes now include STEAM and TV Studio. Additionally, Math Strategies and Language Arts Skills classes have been added to provide additional support to students. Students will remain active throughout the school day, as they will be receiving physical education on a daily basis with Awesome Adventures infused into all PE curricula. In addition to the above mentioned, we will continue to run a thirty-five-minute academic support/advisory period every Wednesday. The Academic Support/Advisory period will be used for quiet study, academic assistance, and/or student advisory. This is a wonderful opportunity that will allow our students additional time with their teachers, allow greater time for character-based presentations from our P.A.C.C. club, and afford the administration the ability to meet with groups of students as it pertains to the social, emotional, and academic progress of the school
In addition to our challenging academic programs, we have a very strong commitment to the fine arts. Students are provided with the opportunity to participate in a full array of instrumental music (band and strings), vocal music, and visual arts classes during the school day. The curriculum is derived from national and state standards for the Fine and Performing Arts. In addition to the classes, the Fine and Performing Arts Program offers after school programs including Jazz Band, small instrumental and vocal performance groups, and the Copeland Theatre Company. We are very proud of the high honors our students receive at various state and regional festival events.
State-of-the-art technology is integrated fully into our educational programs. We are a 1-to-1 Chromebook school with future-ready capabilities. Classrooms are also equipped with ceiling-mounted projection systems and FM audio amplifiers. Four cutting-edge computer labs are available to the students complete with distance learning capabilities.
Students are encouraged to participate in a wide variety of after school programs offered by our staff. In addition, we offer the After School Homework Program, which provides extra help to students in need of homework mediation. Copeland has been a proud affiliate of the National Junior Honor Society for many years. Membership is based upon scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character. Quarterly Citizenship Awards encourage good citizenship and character skills. School spirit is evident in our many themes and school spirit days promoted by a very active Student Council.
Copeland is thankful for the strong support offered by partnerships with the Parent-Teacher Association and other community organizations such as the Substance Abuse Management Committee. Through these organizations, students are provided with funding and educational programs that contribute to our students' success. Together, we are making a difference!
